Action Summary:

n 2011, a pilot project involving local authorities, research institutions, and industry tested whether the use of quicklime (CaO), which dissolves urchin tests on contact, had any unintended environmental impacts in Porsanger Fjord. After 1 year, cover of macroalgae and kelp increased, and the method was then scaled up in Porsanger in year 2 (∼30 ha) and replicated in nearby Hammerfest over an area of ∼80 ha in 2017.

Lessons Learned:

Quicklime can be effective approach for restoring kelp forests with minimal collateral damage when applied correctly.

Project Outcomes:

These efforts resulted in the return of the kelps Saccharina latissima and Alaria esculenta and increases in faunal biodiversity.
