A financial and in-kind investment in the development of a first-of-kind national high-resolution map of remnant Giant Kelp forests, leveraging Google’s geospatial technology stack (Google Earth Engine and Google Cloud). Google has engaged NGIS to lead this work, working closely with TNC Australia, IMAS, and other stakeholders to ensure a fit-for-purpose output.
A financial and in-kind investment to support the complete sequencing of the Giant Kelp genome in an attempt to understand the genetic drivers of thermal tolerance. Google has formalised a partnership with the CSIRO who will be leading this effort. Google is funding a post-doctoral position at CSIRO and teams from Google Research, Google X & Google Cloud will be providing expertise - leveraging our DeepConsensus and DeepVariant technologies, among other things - to help improve the speed and quality of these efforts.
Google will also be working to raise awareness about the plight of Giant Kelp in Australia and globally, leveraging our owned and operated media channels and associated partnerships (spanning Youtube, Arts & Culture etc).
