Monterey, CA is located in the southern part of Monterey Bay, a large feature in central California. Monterey has historically had extensive kelp forests of Macrocystis pyrifera, and moving down the coast the nearshore ecosystem includes Nereocystis luetkeana and multiple species of stipitate, subcanopy kelp species.
