Where transplants survive, they can effectively reduce turf cover, thereby reducing competition from opportunistic turf algae. Transplanting kelp also has the potential to introduce reproductive adults or facilitate understorey recruitment from external populations onto new substrate. However, we found that recruitment was highly site- and context-specific and was likely influenced by interactions between the kelp transplants and the more established biological community (e.g. oysters).\n\nKelp transplants on Glenelg phase 1 and phase 2 reefs (survivorship per patch: 25–75% and 25–100%, respectively) had significantly greater survival (one-way ANOVA: F[₂,₂₁] = 16.43, p < 0.001) than those at O'Sullivan Reef (0–37.5%). No significant difference was detected between the two Glenelg Reef phases, though survivorship was generally higher on phase 2 reefs. Compared to Glenelg Reef, O'Sullivan Reef experiences greater wave exposure and heightened hydrodynamic activity (Perry et al. 2024), which likely impacted transplant survival at this site. This was evident from the displacement of many boulders with kelp attached, some of which had been dragged several meters and some had the kelp pulled from the rubber strapping. This suggests either inadequate securing within the reef matrix or that the boulders were too small to withstand drag forces that can be created by Ecklonia radiata in high-energy environments (de Bettignies et al. 2013)."},"disturbanceDescription":{"id":"6a0fb03eab0598e264488de3_disturbanceDescription","text":""},"recordedBy":[{"__typename":"Platform_Person","id":"69ccb3a9afcecd4cb4810e6a","slug":"emily-clout","name":"Emily Clout","openGraph":{"id":"openGraph_person/emily-clout","image":{"id":"image_kelp-forest-alliance/person/emily-clout_photo__Linkedin_photo_ue6akr","url":"https://res.cloudinary.com/shapeable/image/upload/v1779343632/kelp-forest-alliance/person/emily-clout_photo__Linkedin_photo_ue6akr.png","url2x":null}}}],"species":[{"__typename":"Platform_Species","id":"65d594551368b052bf6ffb20","slug":"ecklonia-radiata","name":"Ecklonia radiata","openGraph":{"id":"openGraph_species/ecklonia-radiata","image":{"id":"image_kelp-forest-alliance/banner/species-ecklonia_image__genus-ecklonia_kt3htd","url":"https://res.cloudinary.com/shapeable/image/upload/v1668995186/kelp-forest-alliance/banner/species-ecklonia_image__genus-ecklonia_kt3htd.jpg","url2x":null}}}],"transplantAdherenceMethod":null,"transplantLifeStage":{"__typename":"Platform_TransplantLifeStage","id":"65d594571368b052bf6ffb54","slug":"adult","name":"Adult","openGraph":{"id":"openGraph_transplant-life-stage/adult","image":null}},"transplantSource":{"__typename":"Platform_TransplantSource","id":"65d594581368b052bf6ffb5a","slug":"wild","name":"Wild","openGraph":{"id":"openGraph_transplant-source/wild","image":null}},"causeOfDecline":{"id":"6a0fb03eab0598e264488de3_causeOfDecline","text":""},"reasons":[],"objective":{"id":"6a0fb03eab0598e264488de3_objective","text":""},"motivations":[{"__typename":"Platform_Motivation","id":"65d5944a1368b052bf6ff8e4","name":"Improving Methodologies","slug":"improving-methodologies","openGraph":{"id":"openGraph_motivation/improving-methodologies","title":"Improving Methodologies","description":{"id":"65d5944a1368b052bf6ff8e4_description","text":"Restoration is a technical process and we are still determining the best approaches to restore kelp forests, your restoration project may be motivated by the desire to refine your methods and learn more about how to effectively conduct restoration."},"image":null}},{"__typename":"Platform_Motivation","id":"65d5944a1368b052bf6ff8e2","name":"Answering Scientific Questions","slug":"answering-scientific-questions","openGraph":{"id":"openGraph_motivation/answering-scientific-questions","title":"Answering Scientific Questions","description":{"id":"65d5944a1368b052bf6ff8e2_description","text":"Restoring an ecosystem system can also create the opportunity to conduct scientific research and answer questions about kelp forests grow, respond to their environment, and interact with the many other seaweeds and animals that share the ocean with them."},"image":null}}],"methodologies":[{"__typename":"Platform_Methodology","id":"65d594491368b052bf6ff8c7","name":"Transplant Adults","slug":"transplant-adults","openGraph":{"id":"openGraph_methodology/transplant-adults","title":"Transplant Adults","description":null,"image":null}}],"disturbanceTypes":[],"impactTypes":[{"__typename":"Platform_ImpactType","id":"65d594481368b052bf6ff898","name":"Ecological","slug":"ecological","openGraph":{"id":"openGraph_impact-type/ecological","title":"Ecological","description":{"id":"65d594481368b052bf6ff898_description","text":"Restored ecosystem attributes such as habitat and associated biodiversity"},"image":null}}],"totalCost":null,"capitalCost":null,"planningCost":null,"constructionCost":null,"inKindCost":null,"monitoringCost":null,"maintenanceCost":null,"costCurrency":null,"costYear":null,"citation":null,"ecologicalPrinciples":[{"__typename":"Platform_EcologicalPrinciple","id":"65d594461368b052bf6ff877","name":"2.
