The alternate hypothesis is no local adaptation has occurred in these southern populations, because strong genetic drift or high gene flow from the northern populations continue. he reason for currently revisiting the data is the recent documentation of continued resilience of the southern-limit populations after a marine heat wave (Cavanaugh et al., 2019) and the renewed interest in using them as a propagule source for restoration efforts to protect against kelp forest loss due to accelerating climate change.\n"},"causeOfDecline":{"id":"6a210e1ae79c763c257b1197_causeOfDecline","text":"The giant kelp forests at their southern distributional limit in the northern hemisphere in Mexico have been negatively affected by warming events over the past decades (Ladah et al., 1999; Edwards, 2004), like other trailing edge kelp populations globally, however, they have also shown resilience (Ladah et al., 1999; Cavanaugh et al., 2019), which is surprising considering the limited spore dispersal (Gaylord et al., 2006) and thermal sensitivity of the species (Schiel & Foster, 2015). After one of the largest extirpation events measured to date on this coast in situ, recovery at the southern limit most likely occurred from microscopic stage survival in a seed bank analogue (Ladah et al., 1999; Ladah & Zertuche-González, 2007), which would have allowed for population and genetic continuity in the absence of spore availability from other populations, and potentially preserved any local adaptation to the thermal and nutrient environment of the region."},"reasons":[{"__typename":"Platform_Reason","id":"65d594511368b052bf6ffa37","name":"Ocean Warming","slug":"ocean-warming","openGraph":{"id":"openGraph_reason/ocean-warming","title":"Ocean Warming","description":null,"image":null}}],"place":{"__typename":"Platform_Place","id":"6a210c16e79c763c257b116e","name":"Campo Kennedy","latitude":31.699333,"longitude":-116.68169},"organisation":{"__typename":"Platform_Organisation","id":"6a2108bee79c763c257b1135","name":"Universidad Autónoma de Baja California","slug":"universidad-autonoma-de-baja-california","openGraph":{"id":"openGraph_organisation/universidad-autonoma-de-baja-california","title":"Universidad Autónoma de Baja California","description":null,"image":null}},"organisations":[{"__typename":"Platform_Organisation","id":"6a2108bee79c763c257b1135","name":"Universidad Autónoma de Baja California","slug":"universidad-autonoma-de-baja-california","openGraph":{"id":"openGraph_organisation/universidad-autonoma-de-baja-california","description":null,"title":"Universidad Autónoma de Baja California","image":null},"country":null}],"motivations":[{"__typename":"Platform_Motivation","id":"65d5944a1368b052bf6ff8e2","name":"Answering Scientific Questions","slug":"answering-scientific-questions","openGraph":{"id":"openGraph_motivation/answering-scientific-questions","title":"Answering Scientific Questions","description":{"id":"65d5944a1368b052bf6ff8e2_description","text":"Restoring an ecosystem system can also create the opportunity to conduct scientific research and answer questions about kelp forests grow, respond to their environment, and interact with the many other seaweeds and animals that share the ocean with them."},"image":null}}],"contact":{"__typename":"Platform_Person","id":"673faba5e780e451f484cbfd","name":"Jose Zertuche-Gonzalez","slug":"jose-zertuche-gonzalez","organisation":null,"openGraph":{"id":"openGraph_person/jose-zertuche-gonzalez","title":"Jose Zertuche-Gonzalez","image":{"id":"image_kelp-forest-alliance/person/jose-zertuche-gonzalez_photo__Jose-Zertuche_wgayel","url":"https://res.cloudinary.com/shapeable/image/upload/v1733354017/kelp-forest-alliance/person/jose-zertuche-gonzalez_photo__Jose-Zertuche_wgayel.jpg","url2x":null}}},"citation":{"__typename":"Platform_Citation","id":"6a2107bee79c763c257b112f","slug":"local-adaptation-of-juvenile-giant-kelp-macrocystis-pyrifera-from-their-southern-limit-in-the-northern-hemisphere-explored-using-reciprocal-transplantation","url":"https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/09670262.2021.2007543","name":"Local adaptation of juvenile giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, from their southern limit in the northern hemisphere explored using reciprocal transplantation.","authors":[],"authorShowsEtAl":null,"edition":null,"publication":"Ladah, L.
